Prepare For Pregnancy

Tips To Help You Prepare For Pregnancy

If your child is going to be planned then you have the advantage to actually being able to prepare for pregnancy, physically and mentally.  Your present health is important to your baby's future health and when you are both healthy then you have more delivery options available to you.

The first step to prepare for pregnancy is visiting your healthcare provider so that you can discuss any health problems and family history concerns that could affect your pregnancy.  You will discuss work and hobbies and also decide if anything can potentially put you at risk for any infections or viruses.

Your personal weight will be the next thing to look at to prepare for pregnancy.  You will want to try to achieve your ideal weight in relation to your height.  If you do not currently exercise then you will probably want to start.  Exercise is not only good for your physical health but it is also good for your mental health and to help you deal with stress.  Walking or running are the most popular forms of exercise chosen and you may want to add yoga into your activities since this is an activity that you can reap great benefits from throughout your whole pregnancy and after.  Ideally, you will want to exercise four or five times a week for 30 minutes but if you are just starting out then you do not want to overdo it.  Gradually work up to this point.

When you prepare for pregnancy, nutrition plays an important role.  A healthy balanced diet is important and should include plenty of protein, calcium and folic acid.  Folic acid is very important because it is needed to prevent birth defects.  Green vegetables and whole grains are a good source of folic acid.  Fresh whole foods should be consumed instead of processed foods and choose organic when possible with fruits and vegetables to avoid so many pesticides.

Alcohol, cigarettes and drugs must be avoided when you prepare for pregnancy.  Many women wait until they get pregnant to quit doing all of these things but your body cannot be completely healthy as long as you're still doing any of them.  It is important to note that if you become pregnant and then quit smoking, it is important that you ween yourself off slowly and not quit cold turkey.  Keep in mind the baby feels the same withdrawals that you do so stopping abruptly is not beneficial for either one of you.

You should go through your prescription and over the counter medications when you prepare for pregnancy.  There are some that you will not want to take during your pregnancy and you will want to discuss these with your healthcare provider.  Medications for asthma, etc, you will need to still take for your own health but some medications will often have a safer substitute that can be recommended.

Finally, you need to plan for emotional support.  Although your baby is planned, it will still bring along a great deal of stress and emotion that you may not be entirely prepared for.  You will worry about parenting, finances short and long term, think about if they are going to take dance classes or play soccer and what school they will attend.  Even though many of these choices you won't be making for many years down the road, the hormones for some reason get your mind turning.  Be sure when you prepare for pregnancy that you have a strong support group around you that you can share your feelings with and that will be there to listen to you.
