Losing Weight While Pregnant

The Concerns of Losing Weight While Pregnant

Although most women worry about gaining weight while pregnant, the real concern is actually losing weight while pregnant. It's normal to gain 25-40 pounds during pregnancy, but sometimes women actually lose weight, either by their own means or for reasons that are out of their control. So how can losing weight while pregnant affect their pregnancies?

One of the reasons that it's not healthy to lose weight while you are pregnant is because both mother and baby need the right amount of vitamins and minerals in order to ensure that both are healthy. The baby also needs these to develop properly and when a woman diets, there is no guarantee that she is getting the healthy diet that she needs.

If you are concerned about gaining too much weight during pregnancy, then you might want to consider talking to a nutritionist. Despite the old saying, you really don't need to eat for two while you are pregnant. In fact, you really only need an additional 300 calories per day. However, you might need to add more nutrients to your diet, such as folic acid, and these can be obtained in pre-natal vitamins.

Sometimes, a woman loses weight while she is pregnant because she is unable to hold down any fluids or food. This is common during the first trimester when morning sickness abounds. Don't worry if you are unable to hold down most food at first. The baby will actually get the nourishment from what food you do manage to hold down before you do. However, it is still important that fluids be retained. If you find that you are unable to keep down even a glass of water then you should report this to your doctor immediately since you run the risk of getting dehydrated.

Occasionally, women experience morning sickness throughout their entire pregnancies which can keep them from eating and gaining a normal amount of weight. When this happens, the doctor might have to prescribe different forms of anti-nausea medication to ensure that the woman is able to eat a healthy diet.

If you are afraid that your pregnancy weight gain is mostly fluid retention, then there are ways that you can safely reduce the swelling that you are experiencing. Cutting out caffeine, drinking more water, and taking care to rest your feet and legs throughout the day can help with swelling, which might take off a couple of pounds without actually losing weight that is going to be harmful to the baby.

If you are planning on becoming pregnant and you are afraid that you are overweight, then losing the weight before you get pregnant is much healthier than losing weight while pregnant.

You shouldn't be afraid to exercise while you are pregnant, either, as long as the exercises are appropriate for your condition. In fact, exercising can help make labor easier, can keep you in shape, and can tone your muscles, too. Going for walks, doing simple cardio routines, and swimming are all things that you can do while you are pregnant. However, participating in heavy exercises with the intention of losing weight is not ideal and is highly discouraged.

Although it might seem as though you will never get your figure back, most women do not actually have that much trouble losing their pregnancy weight. In fact, most women are surprised at how much weight they really lose during the birth. Remember that not all of the weight that you gain while you are pregnant is from the baby itself. You should also account for the extra blood and fluid, breast tissues, uterus increase, and fat stores, as well as the placenta. Once your body gets back to normal, these things will no longer be an issue.
